Job Description

    The Lead Cloth Simulation Artist’s primary responsibility is to oversee the day-to-day operations of the Cloth Simulation team, assisting artists hands-on with their work both technically as well as aesthetically, mentoring and training artists, and interfacing with technical staff on pipeline development and maintenance.

  • The Lead Cloth Simulation Artist’s works closely with seniors and Cloth Simulation Artist’s on creating the cloth simulation which achieves expected and desired look of cloth on the animated TV show
  • Lead a team of artists to achieve weekly and episodic productivity goals while maintaining the aesthetic vision of the Clone Wars TV show.
  • Produce Cloth Simulation shots on a weekly basis with an expectation towards handling the more complex shots.
  • Oversee cloth simulation technical production for current episodes.
  • Guide shot specific problem solving efforts as well as aesthetic decisions pertaining to simulated garments.
  • Maintain and improve garment production pipeline and implement new garment production tools as necessary.
  • Specify and maintain technical standards for garment modeling and animation rigging for simulated garments in general.
  • Guide production and development efforts related to simulated garments for future episodes.
  • Mentoring individual artists technically as well as aesthetically. Helping new hires to get up to speed, in collaboration with Senior artists.
  • Responsible for reviewing the work of each artist on a regular basis and approving shoots for submission to the Episodic Director and CG supervisor.
  • Participates in the recruiting and staffing of the Cloth Simulation team - assesses the work of prospective candidates for the hiring process and works with production management on hiring decisions, as needed.
  • Partners with production management to guide artists’ overall professional development, providing performance feedback and maintaining positive morale amongst the crew.
  • Attend all relevant meetings to promote effective communication throughout the production team.
Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in either Computer Art/Science, Computer Graphics, Physics, Mathematics, software engineering or equivalent work experience.
  • 6+ years production experience with strong working knowledge of various software platforms including Maya or other high end Animation software.
  • Previous experience in a leadership role on a Animated TV project
  • Experience working in a UNIX environment preferred.
  • Knowledge of shell scripting and MEL is required. Knowledge of Python would be an advantage
  • Programming experience in a high level language (e.g. C, Python).
  • Production experience with either Syflex or nCloth; experience of any other simulation system (eg. particle, cloth, fluid) is a plus.
  • Excellent detail-oriented, problem solving skills. Candidate must be able to quickly identify issues and resolve them.
  • Ability to quickly learn and apply new concepts, principles and solutions.
  • Ability to work in a dynamic and collaborative team environment.
  • Strong communication skills (written, verbal and interpersonal)
  • Passion for Film and Animation
  • Demo reel should include a shot breakdown listing jobs performed for each shot.
